You should have a balanced scorecard and include "soft measures" like staff morale & customer satisfaction, as well as the usual ratios like ROCE. To compete in today's fast moving world, we often suggest that daily sales analysis figures should be available overnight to enable the operation to respond next day to unexpected changes in customer demand caused by new fashion fads, terrorist attacks or sudden changes in the weather. Business continuity
We regularly find that clients are too busy to prepare a contingency plan until after a disaster has caused disruption. The number of risks is greater than you think:- product liability, email libel case, environmental damage, power loss, theft, flood, terrorism, fraud, loss of key staff, health & safety lapses - such as accidental death of an employee or a member of the public, economic slump, customer bad debts, contract cancellation, or a hostile take-over bid. We plan and prepare responses to these types of risks to enable you to respond quickly and decisively to preserve your company's image and reputation. Think of Railtrack's failure to respond to repeated serious accidents. Whereas Perrier's immediate response to contamination of its bottled water had quite the opposite effect. We found one firm ran its entire business on a network of PCs without any backup. Another had no security alarms - despite being situated on an industrial estate in a crime area with extensive PC theft. Don’t overlook the obvious.
